£89,000,000,000...........

by normalguy @ 13/12/2007 - 14:45:48

a year. Thats how much it is estimated carers save the NHS.

That is more than the whole of the NHS budget.

How much would it cost the government to give carers £150 week to make them feel valued and to give them some dignity?

The reason this is an issue with me at the moment is because I have been offered a respite carer for 3 days paid for by social services.

That's great. The only problem is, I have to pay for my own break. On £45 a week? yea right.

I have politely declined their offer.

The good news is that apparently a refusal means the authorities have to report why it was refused. I certainly let them know.

It was explained to me that the disabled ALWAYS get made the offer, never the carer!

Ho hum. :)

I will take advantage of every opportunity to embarrass them and try to help bring about change :)

Saves me getting too bored i spose :))

I hope you do tell them why and in colourful language! That's appalling.

I'm not surprised though, it's the same for my friends who have fostered their grandchildren. They have to fight for every penny and then it's handed over as if they're being done the big favour. They would like to adopt the kids but if they did that then they wouldn't get a penny towards their keep.

there is so much injustice, lurking just behind the surface.

They save social services/children and families, too, i.e. when grannies take the children of parents who are not fit to care for them themselves. The allowance is pitiful and does not increase if a granny has to give up her own job.

It must be the most underrated "job" in the world. :-(

hmph... if they do start paying carers, they owe me a lotta money... But it's true. It's terrible, and unfortunately, it doesn't look like it'll be changing soon... It sucks... meh... *hugs*

You should be paid a weekly amount for the hard work you do.
